History of Outdoor Advertising

What is out-of-home advertising?

Out-of-home (OOH) advertising is a huge business with revenues that added up to $6.99 billion in 2008 in the US. OOH is any type of advertising that targets people out of their home, that is, people “on-the-go.”

There are four main categories of formats used to convey the message: billboards, street furniture, transit, and alternative.

1- Roadside billboards are the most traditional and common form of outdoor advertising. This category includes bulletins, digital billboards, murals, and spectaculars.

2- Advertisements on bus shelters, mall kiosks, news racks, and telephone booths belong to the street furniture format.

3- Transit advertising includes any type of advertisement placed on a moving vehicle.

4- Alternative advertising delivers the message to the people in unexpected places. It distributes the advertisement in stadiums, restaurants, cinemas, and any other non-traditional format.
